Our Vision
At Westbury Park we inspire in pupils a curiosity about and fascination for the world around them. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that they gain knowledge and understanding of Britain's past, as well as that of the wider world. As children progress through the school, they build their chronological understanding - first by learning about the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, and Roman Britain in lower key stage 2, before studying the lives of the Tudors and Victorians. Alongside a body of knowledge which covers the national curriculum, we also aim to equip children to become citizens of a complex world, able to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.
What do the children say?
the history of bristol
We are lucky to live in a city that is full of history, from the early slave trade to the Victorian construction of the Suspension Bridge, there is so much to experience and learn about within our locality.
Wherever possible, we integrate these links into our learning. In Key Stage 2, we look closely at the impact the Second World War had on the city and explore life in Victorian Bristol. In Key Stage 1, we think about life in the past. Throughout our curriculum, the strand of similarity and difference is embedded and we encourage the children to make comparisons between life today and life in the past.
Educational visits are also a vital part of our historical learning as they bring the topics to life. Throughout their time at Westbury Park, children experience workshops, visit museums and even get to explore the underground air raid shelters in the city centre.
We are very lucky to live in Bristol and we thread the history of our city into our curriculum to enhance experiences, learning and enjoyment.
"When we learn about History, we learn about so much. We learn about the people and how they lived; we learn about key events; we learn about buildings. I like learning about British History, especially Kings and Queens."
"I love it when we look at sources. When we learn about events, we look at photos, maps and read interviews from people who were there so that we get a full picture."
"In Year 1, we learnt about explorers! I want to be an explorer when I grow up because you can go all around the world and find new things that people will learn about in the future!"
